Firearms may be built to last, but things like dust, dirt, scratches, dings, corrosion, rust, and more can impact their ability to give you an ultimate performance when you need it. Whether you have a handgun, a shotgun, or an automatic weapon like an AR-15, cerakote can offer a layer of protection, enhancing its appearance and boosting its functionality.

What is Cerakote?

Cerakote is both a coating for your firearm that acts as a sealant as well as a finish. There have been other types of gun coatings in the past, such as blued steel and stainless steel. But cerakote is a bit different as it is a ceramic-type coating (hence its name) rather than metal and it protects the surface of the gun from scratches, the elements, and more. Contrary to popular belief, cerakote is not a paint.

The process is rather easy, but it requires very careful attention to detail in order for the process to be done properly. Professionally-applied cerakote can extend the life of your firearm and allow it to work optimally for many, many years.

Why Do Gun Owners Choose to Cerakote?

When you add a cerakote finish to your gun, you end up with a lot of advantages. Most people know that it is a great way to customize it to be a certain design, pattern, or color, but it is so much more than that. With cerakote you can:

  • Extend the longevity of your firearm

  • Keep your firearm from being subjected to wear and tear over time

  • Improve its durability and strength

  • Protect your firearm from corrosion

  • Protect it from scratches, dings, and other unwanted markings

  • Provide a layer that doesn’t allow dust, dirt, and other debris to settle in the crevices

  • Keep it dry in humid, moist conditions

  • Maintain an optimally functioning firearm

How Long Does it Take to Cerakote a Gun?

The process of applying cerakote involves 4 main steps. Before the actual cerakote finish can be applied, there are a few steps that need to take place to ensure that the surface of the firearm is perfect and ready for the finish. Once it is received, the firearm will be disassembled and sandblasted. This will smooth out the surfaces and get rid of any rough patches, while also removing any surface contaminants. The firearm is then polished and painted with the cerakote and then baked to seal the finish.

So, how long does it take to cerakote a gun? The length of time that it takes to apply cerakote varies. On average, it could take as little as a few days or up to two weeks to fully complete the cerakote finish. More complex designs, of course, will take a little longer. It is not uncommon for complex finishes to take about a month to complete. These times can change depending on demand.
